Information About Ortho Evra
The physicians and staff of Associated OB/GYN are concerned about the health of our patients. Recently, we have received a number of inquiries regarding the use of the Ortho Evra Birth Control Patch. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a statement regarding this medication. A portion of the statement is summarized below.
Ortho Women’s Health, a unit of Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, Inc., has updated the prescribing information for the Ortho Evra birth control patch. The label has been updated to include a new warning and provide additional information on the differences between a weekly transdermal delivery system (the Patch) and a daily oral delivery system (the Pill). Specifically, the new warning states: “Hormones from patches applied to the skin get into the blood stream and are removed from the body differently than hormones from birth control pills taken by mouth. You will be exposed to about 60% more estrogen if you use Ortho Evra than if you use a typical birth control pill containing 35 micrograms of estrogen. In general, increased estrogen exposure may increase the risk of side effects. However, it is not known if there are differences in the risk of serious side effects based on the differences between Ortho Evra and a birth control pill containing 35 micrograms of estrogen.”
If you have questions about starting or continuing the Ortho Evra Patch, please contact your physician for an appointment. For more information about Ortho Evra, click here.

Bone Density
Associated Obstetrics and Gynecology strongly believes in practicing preventative medicine. With this practice in mind, we provide bone density testing from our Pontiac office with a state-of-the-art Lunar Prodigy bone density machine.
Bone density determinations are calculated from the hip and spine. Osteoporosis or its precursor osteopenia can be quickly and painlessly determined within a 15-minute examination. The Lunar Prodigy offers an advantage in that it is able to determine a patient’s bone density even if he or she has undergone a hip replacement. Conventional bone density machines are unable to do this. For postmenopausal women, most insurance companies cover bone density examinations.
Dr. Robert Robins is the director of our Bone Density Center. He is certified by the International Society of Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) and will personally review and interpret your bone density results and provide a written report to your doctor.
Associated OB/GYN also offers women over the age of 20 an inexpensive osteoporosis-screening test. With the use of ultrasound technology, a woman’s heel bone density can be calculated to determine if she is at risk for osteoporosis in the rest of her body. If abnormal, a full hip and spine bone density determination can then be performed. The heel ultrasound examination is painless and takes roughly two minutes to complete. For more information on osteoporosis and its treatments, click here.

Body Fat Composition
In addition to bone density information, our Lunar Prodigy machine can calculate a patient’s total body fat composition. This is useful information for those who are on weight loss programs, working with personal trainers to sculpt their bodies, or for those who simply want to know what their body fat percentage is. Associated OB/GYN offers this service for a minimal fee.
